How is Psychiatrist different from a Psychologist?
A Psychiatrist is a medical doctor who treats mental disorders with various modalities e.g. medications, physical treatments like ECT and therapy. A Clinical Psychologist (or psychotherapist) treats disorders with talking therapy. They don’t prescribe medications.
Who is an Old Age Psychiatrist?
After completing 5 yrs of medical school doctors train in a speciality of interest. Psychiatrists complete a three year training gaining experience in various specialisms like forensic psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry. They then go on to gain further three years training in psychiatry speciality if interest. Old Age Psychiatrist complete three years of higher specialist training in mental disorders in elderly frail people.
